Sustainability data

This supplementary report presents AngloGold Ashanti’s performance against all relevant core performance indicators of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), as well as additional indicators where these are material to the business.

Our disclosure covers all operations managed by AngloGold Ashanti and, where relevant, significant exploration projects. Joint ventures and subsidiaries are only included in our reporting where AngloGold Ashanti exercises management control.

Comments on data measurement are included, where relevant, in reporting against each performance indicator. Where data reported in our 2008 report was found to have been incorrect, it has been restated. Restatements in respect of the 2008 financial year have been made on data relating to:

  • Payments to government
  • Number of cases of noise induced hearing loss
  • Environmental incidents
  • Energy data in relation to the Obuasi mine in Ghana.

In addition to reporting at an A+ application level against GRI, AngloGold Ashanti complies in full with reporting and assurance requirements of the Sustainable Development Framework of the International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM). This report gives an overview of the way in which alignment has been achieved between AngloGold Ashanti’s sustainability policies and practices and the 10 principles of the framework.

AngloGold Ashanti is also a member of the UN Global Compact (UNGC) and, as such, supports the 10 principles of the UNGC. It fulfills its reporting obligations to the UNGC through publication of this Sustainability Review.
